LeRoy Clarke

It’s now been a couple weeks since I left Trinidad, but as I was longingly reviewing my photographs from the past four months, I realized that I never got around to posting my photographs from a day visit with Master Artist, LeRoy Clarke. The visit began in St. Ann’s, at LeRoy’s Legacy House – El Tucuche, a personal museum, studio, and home. It was awe inspiring for me to meet an artist who is fortunate enough to be able to live in such a beautiful home overlooking the hills of St. Ann’s, and to be able to live surrounded by one’s life’s work. It was also fascinating to me to wander through this interior design masterpiece, with walls draped intricate paintings, records of years and years of this man’s work, and then to step closer to a piece and to notice that the fine white lines laid carefully over a piece were really chalk lines–these were works in progress! After Legacy House, we made our way to LeRoy’s forest studio and home in Aripo. White both places were very different – Legacy House lavish and exquisite, the Aripo studio modest and quaint – both were quintessentially LeRoy. It was an honor to meet him, to experience his work, and to spend the day peeking into the mind of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s greatest artists.
